What Are Calluses and Corns, and How Can They Be Treated?
Calluses and corns are common foot conditions caused by repeated friction or pressure on the skin. While both are thickened areas of skin, calluses are generally larger and form on larger areas of the soles of feet and toes. Corns are smaller, with a hard center surrounded by inflamed skin, and often develop on the tops, sides or between toes. The also form in peak areas of pressure on the soles of the feet. These conditions can lead to discomfort or pain when walking or wearing shoes. Treatment typically involves reducing the pressure or friction causing the problem, using protective pads, and in some cases, carefully removing the thickened skin. Keeping your feet moisturized and wearing properly fitting shoes can help prevent future occurrences.
