What Is Sports Foot Care?

Sports foot care focuses on the assessment and treatment of foot and lower limb issues arising from athletic activity. Athletes place significant and repetitive stress on their feet, and foot problems that might be manageable in daily life can become limiting, or sidelining, for someone who trains regularly.

Common presentations in athletic patients include heel pain and plantar fasciitis from high-impact activity, metatarsalgia and ball-of-foot pain from repetitive push-off loading, blisters and friction injuries from ill-fitting footwear, skate-related compression injuries and toe deformities, ingrown toenails worsened by tight boots or repetitive trauma, and general biomechanical issues that affect how load is distributed through the foot during sport.

Chiropodists assess not just the injury but the mechanical factors behind it, including foot structure, gait, footwear, and training load, to address the cause rather than just the symptom.

How Stayner Foot Clinic Approaches Athletic Foot Care

Jannel Somerville, Chiropodist, has been treating athletic patients in the Stayner and Collingwood area since 2014. Jannel is a former figure skater, and she has a working familiarity with the demands that sport places on feet, particularly in ice sports. Hockey players and skaters make up a notable portion of her regular patient base.

Will Stewart, BA (Hons), D.Ch., Chiropodist, brings a Kinesiology background to the clinic. His Honours BA from the University of Western Ontario gives him a strong foundation in biomechanics and athletic movement, which informs how he assesses foot function in active patients.

Both Jannel and Will assess footwear, foot structure, and mechanics before recommending a treatment plan. Custom orthotics are a frequent component of care for athletic patients, particularly where biomechanical correction is needed alongside injury management.

Ongoing Care

Athletes often benefit from periodic visits to manage recurring issues and check in on orthotic performance as training demands change. Your chiropodist provides guidance on at-home management between appointments.

What Sports Foot Care Can Provide

Athletes who address foot problems with a chiropodist typically see reduced pain during training, improved biomechanical support through custom orthotics, and better management of recurring issues like blisters, ingrown toenails, and heel pain. The goal is to keep athletes training at the level they want to, with foot pain as less of a limiting factor.
